As I celebrate Sophie Doggie’s 15th birthday today, gratitude flows endlessly from the warmth of my heart.   I wish for every pet to be loved and appreciated and celebrated.  But, I’m doing my happy dance because her 13th birthday was unexpected, her 14th birthday was unexpected, this 15th birthday was unexpected.  See where I’m going here?  (At this point, I’m not so sure her 16th birthday is currently unexpected.) 

When the cute, furry puppy joined the fam 15 years ago, she fit right in with the active, energetic, curious kids.  The four of them didn’t stop playing or exploring.  Constant movement was just a way of life.  At that time, I never pictured a quiet home or a slow, aging dog.  I was grateful for those days, and I’m grateful for each of these days with my old girl.  As I moved past grieving Sophie’s terminal diagnosis and into acceptance, our time softened.  Not one of her extra 1,089 days has been taken for granted.  They have not all been easy, but they have all been appreciated.   

With acceptance, I’ve learned that being guided to the one best next step is all we need.  With that one, comes the next one.  Add gratitude for the one step, and days are bright. 

I believe Miracles are always offered to us.  My wish for you on Sophie’s birthday is that you will reach out and accept your own Miracles.
