Failure or Plot Twist?
Failure or Plot Twist?
I love to read the end of the book right after the introduction, even non-fiction. I like to know what’s coming, so I can relate all unfolding events to the known outcome. So, in my life, I appreciate a known outcome to which I can relate my own developments. I plan and strategize. And, I really don’t like when my plan doesn’t work.
The joy of many chapters of experience is looking back on the effect of my “failings.” The unexpected plot twists have pushed my protagonist to grow in unexpected ways. The turn of events offers an opportunity to ask if the storyline still suits my current desires and strengths. Sometimes we’re pushed into growth and perhaps even into a suspense thriller. How is your character strengthening? To be honest, the easy chapters are a bit of a dull read compared to the ones filled with conflict and growth experience.
I’m still going to visualize my tale’s ending. I’m still going to be annoyed (for a bit) when the current chapter’s antagonist challenges me. But, now I’m going to wear reading glasses with lenses tinted with a perspective of growth. How does this story within my story strengthen my narrative? To what unknown is this plot twist leading?
As authors of our lives, let’s write the next chapter using plot twist wisdom to move us in the direction of our (perhaps new) dreams. Accept the previous lessons as you turn the page.
